Stay Safe with Propane
If you smell gas or are experiencing signs of a gas leak, immediately exit the premises and contact
910-862-5560 or 9-1-1 for immediate assistance.
Stay Alert. Know the Signs.

Sniff Test
Smells like rotten eggs or skunk spray may indicate you have a gas leak.

Yellow or Irregular Flames
Propane should always burn with a blue flame. Yellow or irregular flames indicate that the propane isn't burning properly, which could be a sign that carbon monoxide is being released.

Soot Buildup
Propane burns clean. There should never be soot in or around your appliances. Soot buildup indicates that the propane is not burning properly.
If you smell or suspect a gas leak:

1
Leave the area immediately
Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect a gas leak.

2
No flames or sparks
As you leave, avoid igniting the leaking gas. Some electrical devices and appliances can create spark when manipulated. Do NOT turn any light switches on or off. Do not interact with any appliances, outlets, or landline phones. No smoking, vaping, or open flames.

3
Shut off the gas at the tank
Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).

4
Report the leak
Once you are safely away from the gas leak, call your propane retailer right away. If you cannot reach you propane retailer, call 911 or your local fire department.

5
Do not return to the building or area
Do not return to the building or area until your propane retailer, emergency responder, or qualified professional determines that it is safe to do so.

6
Get your propane system checked
Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, your propane retailer or a qualified professional must check your entire propane system to ensure that it is leak-free.
